Glossary

Mirzoeff’s concept that global society is visual: Mirzoeff was saying that each year we are taking more and more photos as well as watching more online videos. “the global photography archive increased by some 25 percent or so in 2014” (Mirzoeff 6). Each generation is using the global network more than the last and with each generation we gain more knowledge visually.

Context: There is no right or wrong way to interoperate the context of something. Because “The contexts we bring to a texts personally aren’t a matter of right and wrong; they are curcually distinct ways of seeing.” (Ruszkiewicz, John J., Daniel Anderson, and Christy Friend. “Reading Texts.” Beyond Words: Cultural Texts for Reading and Writing. 3rd ed. Boston: Perason, c2012. 34. Print.) Depending on our own personal life experiences can change the way that we view something and therefore see it in a different context to someone else.

Identity: Can be used in a few different contexts, but Mirzoeff talks about it in the way that we know how we are and the way that we show others who we are with our identity.

Represent: The way that we portray ourselves to others. It can also mean to act or speak for someone, in this a portrait could also represent us and show other people how we want them to see us.

Influences: They are things that can effect us in different ways such as the way we act or behave, the opinions that we have. Whether that be about ourselves or the way that we see others or the way we present ourselves.

Ideology: Is a system in which a set of theories, that could be political are set upon. Ideologists are people that base their politics on an unnatural theory.
